WCA Smart Grid SIG presents Smart Grid Standards Soup:

An Update on the State of Smart Grid Standards Evolution

The birthing of the Smart Grid is one of the most comprehensive, sweeping programs in US history, ultimately affecting everything from the way power is generated, distributed, controlled, and used, to the way users receive energy-related services, information, and billing.

Bringing such changes from the lab to main street on an extremely aggressive schedule mandates the development of a dizzying array of standards controlling every aspect of Smart Grid activity. The way we interface to our meters and utility companies, the way services are scheduled and coordinated, how we access out grid-related information, how we interact with smart devices, how devices communicate, how services and devices are certified for interoperability and function - these are but a sampling of the issues that will require standardization to take root in reality.
