Event Over With a foundation in place around policy and business issues, utilities will be well positioned to effectively deploy wireless technologies. Both smart grid and smart home environments are poised for explosive innovation, and wireless network technologies will have a key role to play. This track builds on Wednesday’s wireless track and explores these roles across three sessions. Thinking more broadly, our first session explains why wireline networks will also be relevant, especially in scenarios where wireless options are not practical or even possible. Shifting back to wireless, there is an enormous opportunity around M2M – both on the grid and in the home – and the second session will assess what 4G brings here. Finally, we will delve into a highly charged topic – the potential health risks associated with AMI rollouts and the wireless WAN access used to support them. As important as wireless networks are, they are not ubiquitous enough to meet the communications needs of all utilities. To varying degrees, the same can be said about their reliability, security and ability to deliver a high quality voice experience. Just as wireless networks are evolving towards 4G and LTE, wireline networks have been considerably upgraded with fiber. These upgrades are costly for telcos, and to generate a better ROI, wireline operators are eager to partner with utilities. Likewise, some utilities have taken it upon themselves to invest in their own fiber networks. This session will explore the value proposition for wireline networks and identify the best opportunities for utilities to leverage these leading technologies, either for themselves, or in partnership with telcos. Wireless networks will become increasingly important for smart grid as 4G, LTE and future iterations come to market. This is particularly true for M2M, which will enable utilities to have unprecedented capabilities to monitor, diagnose and manage network performance, as well as respond to problems more effectively. In this session, you will learn how the real time and location-based nature of today’s wireless networks will help utilities both reduce energy loss due to grid inefficiencies, as well as improve their ability to forecast demand and manage generation resources. Looking further ahead, M2M opportunities in the home will also be explored, particularly in the areas of home automation and energy management. O'Rourke - Panelist M2M Solutions Engineer Sprint Tom Thomassen - Panelist Senior Development Manager Symantec Asha Keddy - Panelist Division Manager Intel

In the Engineer’s mind, smart meters are a big step forward; they provide utilities greater visibility into energy consumption patterns, and they allow consumers to play a direct role in managing usage and conserving energy. As AMI deployments unfold, utilities are experiencing a different reality, and it is not safe to assume that smart meters are welcome in the home. Consumer buy-in is critical for smart grid to succeed, and utilities need to be better at communicating and educating the market about what AMI is all about. There are a number of hot button issues to address, such as the impact of AMI on rising energy bills, potential health risks from radio waves, and personal privacy. If you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, you won’t want to miss this session. JavaScript version | Jon Arnold Session update - Prof. Gadh has moved from this panel to the V2G session on Tuesday - don't miss it! He's a great speaker. In his place, we've just added John Cooper from Ecomergence. John is a terrific addition, and has a lot of experience in this space. Welcome, John! |
| Jon Arnold We could build a whole track around M2M, but if you only have 90 minutes, Berge and his A-list group of speakers will give you a lot of takeaways for what 4G and other wireless technologies mean for utilities in this space. Joining Berge will be Alvarion, Inmarsat, Sprint, Symantec and Intel - can you top that? |
| Jon Arnold With all the focus on wireless for this track, wireline also has a major role to play in smart grid. This is the session you need to attend to learn how wireline and fiber are being used, especially among munis and rural utilities. Denis has the right lineup to give you the full picture - EPB Fiber, NECA, Tantalus and Attorney Steve Rivkin. |
| Jon Arnold I hope you'll join us for this session at the end of CW. It's a pivotal smart grid topic, and with this group of speakers, you will definitely learn some new things. |
