Benefits of Smart Grid

Event Over

Smart grid benefits accrue in part from implementation of highly interoperable solutions. This track will build on the interoperability benefits papers published by the GridWise Architecture Council in 2009. These papers explored the economic, reliability and environmental benefits of interoperability. This track consists of one session devoted to each of these three areas of smart grid benefit.

Reliability Benefits of Smart Grid

This session will explore the ways in which interoperability of electric power system components and systems enhance system reliability. Speakers will address both transmission and distribution system reliability and discuss specific benefits such as fewer outages resulting from better system monitoring and additional real-time data acquisition, faster service restoration following an outage due to better information availability, increased system resilience due to better information flow, and better utilization of system resources due to improved integration of both supply and demand side resources.

Economic Benefits of Smart Grid

This session will discuss the economic benefits of the various investments in smart grid related assets, systems, standards, programs and rate design initiatives. Speakers will explore the different methodologies used to measure the costs and benefits associated with each smart grid initiative, and discuss the regulatory changes that may be necessary to maximize the expected economic impact. Speakers will also discuss the impediments facing the various initiatives (e.g., different rate designs, implementing interoperable systems, customer choice, and privacy concerns) for enhancing the economic benefits from smart grid investments as observed in the different markets and regulatory compacts around the country. They will also address how these impediments may be addressed to ensure the support of the various stakeholders, including customers, utilities, technology providers and environmentalists.

Environmental Benefits of Smart Grid

Is the industry delivering on the expectations for electric vehicles and renewables? What role will standards play in integrating these emerging applications into the smart grid? The panel assembled will attempt to tackle interoperability and standards issues around actual deployments related to EVs and PVs. This session will be interactive with the majority of the session designated for Q&A from the audience.

David O'Brien I wanted to let folks know I have significantly revamped my slides for tomorrow. I got out here last night and took a look at the slides are found they did not sufficiently address the topic. Looking forward to the discussion tomorrow.
Anto Budiardjo Great lineup of speakers, important subject. Let's start the dialog online, could speakers post comments on their perspectives? Please go to http://goo.gl/spovt or post a response below.
