OpenADR Technologies and Ancillary Services Workshop

Event Over

In recent years, demand response (DR) has been in the center of Smart Grid discussions simply because it links the grid with the consumer in order to address peak demand issues. In many parts of the country, DR programs are designed to reduce peak load due to cooling loads on hot summer afternoons. As DR is evolving and proving itself as a reliable resource, many stakeholders in different parts of the country are considering expanding its applications. The use of DR in ancillary services to replace a portion of dirty generators and expensive storage or to mitigate intermittency of renewable generation integration into the grid is a recognized potential growth area. In this track we will hear from various stakeholders about the challenges and opportunities with utilizing DR as just another resource in the ancillary services markets.

The track has three sessions. The first session is an update on the OpenADR technologies and implementations. The second session will provide supply side perspectives. The third session will concentrate on demand side issues with special focus on technologies that are currently being piloted in different parts of the country involving residential, commercial and industrial sectors. Each speaker will have a 15-20 minute presentation, followed by a moderated discussion.

ISO Perspectives for DR in Ancillary Services

Fast DR, facilitated with end-to-end automation between the ISOs and the consumers, is a new and growing area for automated DR. In this session, we will define ancillary services and hear from the ISOs about the challenges and opportunities for DR to participate in ancillary services markets.

DR Opportunities & Technologies to Enable Ancillary Services

In this session, technology developers, pilot participants and researchers will outline challenges and opportunities for DR to participate in ancillary services markets from their own experiences. The presentation and discussion topics will be designed to answer the following questions:
•What is the potential for DR?
•Which end-uses are best candidates?
•What are the preliminary results of on going pilots around the country?
