A key objective of the future energy system is to make it sustainable, so as to provide adequate energy for future human endeavours. This is likely going to be achieved by deployment of large amounts of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, with the non-ideal attribute that they are variable and not easily controlled. These energy sources are also likely to be distributed, which changes the electric system architecture significantly. Smart Grid is a key component to balancing renewable and distributed energy systems with demand.
